NS reports 21 new deaths and 49 hospitalizations for COVID-19 in a weekly update

Nova Scotia reported 21 new deaths from COVID-19, 49 hospitalizations and a daily average of 211 laboratory-confirmed cases in its latest weekly figures released on Thursday.

Last week, the province recorded nine deaths and 41 hospitalizations.

The latest figures are for a seven-day period ending June 6. The province said two deaths occurred last week, while 19 occurred between April 25 and May 30. He said there is usually a delay in reporting deaths.

The province said that for people aged 70 and over, the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19 is almost 11 times higher, while the risk of death is about 125 times higher, compared to the populations most teens.

Of the COVID-19 deaths reported this week, 19 were people under the age of 70. The other two were between 60 and 69 years old.

When adjusted for age, the province estimates that people who are not vaccinated or who only have one dose of a VOCID-19 vaccine have a mortality rate:

  • 7.5 times more than two-dose ones.
  • 13 times larger than those of three or more doses.

As of March 2020, there have been 421 deaths from COVID-19 in Nova Scotia.

The province is encouraging people to get vaccinated if they have not already done so. Those aged 70 or over are recommended to receive a second booster dose.

Since the start of the Omicron wave in Nova Scotia on December 8, 2021:

  • The mean age of PCR-confirmed COVID-19 cases is 43 years.
  • The average age of hospitalization is 72 years.
  • The average age of reported deaths is 81 years.

Nova Scotia Health says 34 people are in hospital due to COVID-19, with four in intensive care.

He said another 164 people have COVID-19 but are in hospital for another reason.

Health officials said there were 63 people in the hospital who contracted COVID-19 after being admitted.

Their numbers do not include the IWK Health Center.

There are 155 Nova Scotia Health employees out of work on Thursday because they have been diagnosed with COVID-19, are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test, or are exposed to a member of the household who tested positive for to COVID-19.

The breakdown of unemployed Nova Scotia Health employees in each area is as follows:

  • Central area: 76.
  • Eastern area: 33.
  • North Zone: 22.
  • Western area: 27.
