High water is seen on the shores of Lake Kamloops in Savona.

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend, but stay away from the high waters.

That was the message from government officials on Friday during a press conference to update the flood situation in BC.

“I would really call for safety and caution as we arrive this weekend,” BC River Forecast Center chief Dave Campbell said.

“The flows in the rivers of the vast majority of the province are extremely high for this time of year, unusually high. So you certainly recognize this danger.”

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan called for a similar precaution.

“Public safety around water bodies is critical,” he said.

“We don’t want to see statistics like we do sometimes at this time of year, with people accessing very cold water and becoming hypothermic or being swept away by high levels of rivers and streams.”

The first heat wave of the year in BC is expected to see temperatures reaching the 30 C mark by the end of the weekend and next week.
