Oil Kings win WHL title, advance to Memorial Cup with sixth game win

The Edmonton Oil Kings are Western Hockey League champions – and destined for the Memorial Cup – after a 2-0 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Monday night at Rogers Place.

Jakub Demek and Kaiden Guhle provided the attack and Sebastian Cossa provided the surveillance of the net when Edmonton won the WHL Championship Series to the best of seven by 4-2. Jake Neighbors participated with two assists.

Edmonton beat Seattle 36-27 and enjoyed a 1-0, 2-0 period advantage.

Seattle opened the championship with a 2-1 win over Edmonton, but the Oil Kings got three straight wins, including two in Seattle, to take control of the series. Seattle won the fifth game in Edmonton 3-2 to extend the series to six games.

The Oil Kings will represent the WHL at the 102nd Memorial Cup Championship, June 20-29 in Saint John, NB.
