The Community Shield is the traditional curtain raiser to the new Premier League season.
For many, it’s much more than a pre-season friendly: it’s a competitive game with a trophy, a trophy that coaches often count in their personal hauls, as a reward.
But it has also become something of an omen ahead of the Premier League campaign.
Analysis by Sportsmail shows that only one team, Manchester City in 2018, has won the Premier League title after winning the Community Shield in the last 11 years.
Manchester City and Liverpool will renew their rivalry in the Community Shield
Leicester won the 2021 pre-season award after beating City 1-0 thanks to a late penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho.
However, it proved to be a fleeting moment of joy for Brendan Rodgers’ side as they struggled in the league last season, finishing a disappointing ninth and failing to qualify for any European competition.
Leicester were the latest victims of the Community Shield curse, a fate City and Liverpool will hope to avoid when they meet at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
Over 20 years until 2001, only six teams have won the title after hoisting the Community Shield.

The early-season winners went top of the pile for four consecutive campaigns between 2007-08 and 2010-11, with former Community Shield staple Manchester United lifting the trophy on three occasions.
But since United swept Chelsea at Wembley in 2010, only City have followed suit, a remarkable statistic that may play on the minds of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.
So: Will the outcome of the clash between City and Liverpool influence the title destination?
Well, pre-season can often be a red herring and not every team takes the Community Shield as seriously as Jose Mourinho, who famously boasted of it when he claimed to have won three trophies in his first season at Old Trafford.
Pep Guardiola says “many teams”, not just Liverpool, could challenge his defenders
Sides may still be bringing in new players when the curtain rises and are not always able to field a fully fit starting XI.
Klopp, in typical fashion, has already lowered expectations. The German said this week that he believes the Community Shield has been scheduled too soon for a Liverpool side that did not finish last season until the end of May.
The Liverpool manager has pledged to take the game seriously because he has never won it. But he says flexibility should be considered over the weekend he plays, given his team competed in the Champions League final in Paris on May 28.
“If you win it, it’s a very important competition. If you lose it, it becomes less important,” he said.

For Guardiola, it seemed to suggest that the winner of Saturday’s clash between the two dominant teams in English football in recent years will not have a huge bearing on the title race, with “many” teams who could take the first place at the end of the season. the season
“I don’t know, I promise you, if I could predict the future I would let you know,” said Guardiola.
“Usually in the Premier League there are a lot of teams and you expect that.”
Guardiola’s City have contested four of the last five Community Shields, winning two and losing two.
Last year’s defeat to Leicester was followed by City claiming the domestic game’s biggest prize 10 months later. Guardiola would certainly break your hand for the same result this season, even if it means losing against Klopp’s Liverpool on Saturday.
