After a sweltering weekend in southern Ontario with the humidex feeling in the 40s in many locations, we expect a welcome chill on Monday. That’s courtesy of a cold front that will sweep the region later Monday and also bring the risk of thunderstorms. For the most part, these storms should not be severe, however, the environment is favorable for some severe storms to affect parts of southwestern Ontario and the K/W and Hamilton regions.
Current weather guidance shows the potential for a cluster of cells to develop over Lake Huron during the mid to late afternoon hours. These storms will slowly move southeast making landfall along the coastline between Goderich and Sarnia. From damaging wind gusts and large hail to perhaps even an isolated tornado, all types of storm threats cannot be ruled out. The tornado risk is strongest along the coast, especially around the Grand Bend area, but that will depend on the exact strength of the environment at the time and where the storms make landfall. As we head into the evening hours, these storms will begin to transition to an increased risk of wind and flash flooding for Windsor, Chatham, K/W and Hamilton as they continue southeast.
A few clusters of thunderstorms are also expected to develop over central and eastern Ontario during the afternoon and evening hours, but should remain light with heavy rain as the main threat. For the GTA and Niagara region, they will see some late evening thunderstorm activity from the Lake Huron cells, but they should be much weaker at this point and pose a much lesser threat in comparison with the one from the day before.
