Overwatch 2 to include cross progression and remove loot boxes

The Overwatch 2 unveiling event brought us a lot of new information about Blizzard’s upcoming free “live experience,” which will arrive on October 4th.

Blizzard shared an in-depth look at Overwatch 2, confirming that it will feature cross-progression but not loot boxes, along with other new details.

“Free play removes the barrier to entry, allowing anyone, anywhere, to enter the game, group with friends, or find people to play with online,” says Blizzard. “With this change to free-to-play, we will be adding cross-progression, which will allow everyone to play, progress and access their unlocked content seamlessly across all gaming platforms.”

Loot boxes will not be displayed: “Instead, modernized live service will give our players the power to shape their own experiences.” We will have the Battle Pass, a new in-game store and seasonal content every nine weeks.

Blizzard also shared a roadmap for the first and second seasons, along with more plans for 2023 and beyond. Junker Queen, who will appear in the first season alongside Sojourn and an as-yet-unannounced supporting hero, received an original story as well as an animated short. The first season will also offer us a new 5v5 PvP experience, “reworked heroes, new maps and modes and more” along with a “reimagined competitive experience”.

Meanwhile, the second season will bring with it a new tank hero, a new map and new looks, while the new PvE experience is scheduled for 2023, along with new heroes, new maps, new game modes and more.

Overwatch 2 arrives in October, while the beta version for consoles and PCs arrives later this month. What do you think of Blizzard’s plans for Overwatch 2? Let us know in the comments!
