Pat Cummins reveals that Mitchell Starc could be left out by the second surprise test selection

Test captain Pat Cummins has hinted that Glenn Maxwell could be added to the team for the second test against Sri Lanka, and would christen the number 8 and serve as the third spinner if he did.

The skipper spoke to the media at Galle on Thursday and, after naming the same 12-man team as the first test, said the only potential change would be Maxwell for Mitchell Starc, with only one bowling alley fast to Cummins.

Both Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson will keep their places, the two played the lion’s share of time in the previous game: Cummins didn’t play at all in the second inning, while Starc only had 11 overs combined in the two digs. .

Sri Lanka have had a horrible preparation for the second test, with Dhananjaya de Silva, Asitha Fernando and Jeffrey Vandersay all positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, joining Praveen Jayawickrama on the sidelines, who did the same a couple of days ago .

Australia got an impressive win last week, thanks to an amazing source with Travis Head catching four ports in the second inning.

The temptation to play three slow bowling players may now prove too much for Cummins to resist.

They also have Cameron Green on their side, but the versatile youngster has been restricted to bowling so far on the tour as he still has his workload managed.

The second test begins on Friday.
