PHOTOS: Funnel clouds spotted after storms hit southern Alberta

Monday, June 6, 2022, 8:58 pm – Monday’s storms caused heavy rainfall and hail in several communities in southern Alberta, along with localized flooding and numerous funnel cloud sightings.

Weather in southern Alberta has been repeated over the past two days: storms, heavy rain and hail.

On Monday he added another element to this stormy pattern: funnel clouds.

A semi-stationary boundary covered by the province acted as a trigger for storms in the afternoon and evening. An area of convergence of the atmosphere centered in the southeastern parts of the province also led to the development of funnel clouds at various locations. There has been no confirmation that any of them have landed to become a tornado.

The storms caused heavy rainfall and hail in several southern Alberta communities, along with localized flooding, as well as funnel cloud sightings.

“With the lack of higher-level flow in the region, developing storms will move slowly again and have the potential to produce nickel-sized hail and heavy rains that could cause sudden flooding if the storm remains stationary.” . Kelly Sonnenburg, a meteorologist for The Weather Network, said of the storm threat on Monday.

In Calgary, many drivers had stopped in the middle of traffic to take refuge under a flyover, an incredibly dangerous act. If you are caught in a storm on a road, here are some tips in the chart below.

Showers and storms will continue on Monday evening, and rain will continue overnight. On Tuesday, there are also possible showers with some thunderstorms, but not as widespread as on Monday, as the system is weakening and shifting to the southeast.

In the meantime, users were quick to post images of the funnel clouds and other impacts of the storm on social media. Below is just a selection of what’s currently circulating.
