Poland’s Iga Swiatek beats American Coco Gauff to win second French Open title

Poland’s world number one Iga Swiatek defeated American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 to win the women’s singles at the French Open.

Key points:

  • It is a second Grand Slam title for 21-year-old Swiatek
  • Gauff was playing his first Grand Slam final
  • Swiatek broke Gauff’s serve five times during both sets

It was the second Grand Slam title for 21-year-old Swiatek, who also won at Roland Garros in 2020.

Victory on the court Philippe Chatrier against 18-year-old Gauff, who was playing his first Grand Slam final, extended Swiatek’s winning streak to 35 games.

Swiatek, seen as an overwhelming favorite before the start of the dirt track, broke Gauff’s serve five times during both sets and sealed the contest in his first match point in one hour and eight minutes.

Swiatek’s undefeated career is the same as that of Venus Williams in 2000 as the longest of this century.

Swiatek has won its last six tournaments with a 42-3 record this year.

He has become a dominant tennis figure, with 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams out of action for nearly a year and three-time senior champion Ash Barty announced in March that she would retire at 25 and that would give up ranking number 1.

This allowed Swiatek to climb to the top of the WTA rankings.

Her last defeat was in February to 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Swiatek has a game that works on all surfaces, but its great triumphs have come to red clay.

Her 2020 victory in Paris made her the first player in Poland to win an individual Grand Slam title.

Rafael Nadal will face Casper Ruud in the men’s final on Sunday.
