Polar explosion to offer the coldest day of the year

A glacial cold front will mark the beginning of winter when a polar explosion will sweep the countries of the southeast.

Starting today, a powerful cold front will bring rain, snow and wind to the communities of Western Australia, South East South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and East New South Wales.

The Meteorological Office predicts the winter weather pattern to provide the coldest day of the year so far and break most winter temperature records.

Some parts of WA can expect storms with strong winds and total rainfall of up to 90 mm, with a Floodwatch warning off the coast of Pilbara.

Moving to SA, intense cold temperatures will accompany storms in areas of the Northeast Pastoral District on Monday.

The seas are expected to be wild with big waves pounding parts of the central SA coast.

As the system continues to move east, snowstorms are likely to freeze parts of Victoria on Tuesday.

Snowfall is expected to drop to 1,200 meters on Monday, and then to 700 meters on Tuesday in areas of alpine peaks.

Heavy and severe storm warnings can be issued from tomorrow due to harmful winds, and sheep farmers across Victoria are warning of the risks to livestock.

The outbreak of polar weather will affect NSW on Monday and bring strong icy winds.

Temperatures in Sydney could drop to 7 degrees later in the week, with colder temperatures expected in the west of the city.

The regions of the state will be the coldest, as Dubbo and Mudgee tremble with temperatures of -1 degree.

NSW’s Northern Lands are expected to be the coldest part of NSW with early morning temperatures dropping three degrees below zero.
