Police charge second-degree murder with stabbing in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a second person in connection with a deadly stabbing in the city in early May.

Winnipeg police said Friday that RCMP officers arrested 19-year-old Joseph Bruce Evans at Norway House, Man. Evans was returned to Winnipeg and has been remanded in custody on a second-degree murder charge.

The indictment has not been proven in court.

The arrest comes almost a month after police found Richard Dominic Anthony Contois, 31, mortally wounded near the Slaw Rebchuk Bridge. Contois was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police have previously arrested a 17-year-old man from Winnipeg who is also facing a second-degree murder charge. The indictment has not been proven in court.

Winnipeg police have previously said Contois was assaulted with a handgun. His death has been investigated as a homicide. Police said Contois and the two people arrested were believed to be strangers before. Investigators believe an altercation between them escalated until Contois was stabbed.

Days after his death, Contois’ mother, Crystal, told CTV News that her son, who was a father, had been torn from his family.

“(Her children) will never have their father there for their first dance, their wedding. You took everything from me to my grandson and granddaughter,” he told CTV News.
