Hi folks, and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl!
In last week’s edition, we launched Assault Suit Leynos / Target Earth in the ring, with American boxing art facing Japan. It was also a record, as Japan’s most moderate outlook on the game garnered 56% of the vote. However, it’s clear that many of you liked the artwork more “out there” for the American release!
This week, we’ll take a look at Mario Kart: Double Dash !! for the GameCube (a game we declared the best in the series, thank you very much), one of the most unique entries in the Mario Kart franchise. We will group North America and Europe for this, because although the two designs show slight variations in their composition, they are nevertheless a little too similar to compete with each other.
Japan, on the other hand, shows a very different box art design, and it will be interesting to see which one you prefer!
But enough talk, we continue with the show.
Be sure to cast your votes in the next poll; but first, let’s look at the same box art designs.
North America / Europe

So as we mentioned above, Double Dash !! for North America and Europe they present very similar designs; in fact, the characters and setting are identical to each other, but the composition is slightly different, with the much expanded NA version. This means that characters like Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have moved to stay more directly behind Mario and Luigi. with Yoshi and Birdo pushed further to the left.
We’re not sure what design was “first” with these two, but we’re tempted to lean more toward NA in this one; the EU version has much more unused space occupied by the blue sky and green hills; it’s nice, but maybe not so “punchy”. Either way, we won’t be confronting these two, but let us know in the comments which one you prefer.

So the Japanese version of Double Dash !! it is very different, it shows Mario and Luigi in full glory on a white background with a checkered pattern running down the right side. It’s underestimated, of course, but there’s definitely a “race” atmosphere here. We also like the fact that Mario and Luigi’s key art demonstrates the ability to wield two different weapons; a trope that at the time was new to the franchise.
All in all, it’s a nice design; It may not be as busy as the NA or EU versions, but it’s something we think would look great on a steelbook or a collector’s sleeve.
So this is your luck for this week! Be sure to vote and let us know in the comments which design you like best and why. Pau!
