Post workers have to go on a new one-day strike in a wage dispute. Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) from more than 100 Crown post offices – the largest branches are often located on main streets – will be out on July 11th.
Crown post offices will close for a day, while workers will strike against a massive pay cut in real terms. The union said its members had rejected a salary offer saying it was worth 3% with effect from April and a lump sum of £ 500, which the CWU said was well below inflation. . It will be the third national strike by postal workers this year.
CWU Deputy Secretary Andy Furey said: “No worker wants to be in this situation, but postmasters cannot be surprised that our members question insensitive decisions. This dispute is about the dignity and respect of employees who working hard: essential public.servers who, as key workers, provided unprecedented customer service during the pandemic.
“Our members feel betrayed and will not tolerate their standard of living being shattered by those in charge of a public service which thanks to the efforts of our members raised tens of millions of pounds in annual profits. There is more than enough money to to a reasonable salary increase. – Implementing this pay cut is a management option, not a necessity. “
A Post spokesman said: “We want to assure our customers that the vast majority of our 11,500 offices are unaffected by the CWU’s decision to strike on July 11 and will be open all day. 114 offices, usually in the city center, which are managed directly by the Post Office and in previous strike days more than a third have opened as usual.We are disappointed that the CWU has made the decision to strike, but we have the hope we can reach a wage agreement soon. “
