Practice: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak looks like a powerful piece of DLC

Monster Hunter Rise is great – if you haven’t played it, just look at our review to see how we liked it, so when Capcom asked if we liked having a pop in the new DLC expansion titled Sunbreak, we I couldn’t say no.

We were only able to try out two of the missions on offer when we visited Capcom’s UK offices, one to hunt down a Lunagaron and another to finish off a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate classic, a Seregios.

The Lunagaron was your standard mission, but we liked to meet another new monster by chance, a great ape-like thing called Garagolm. Suffice it to say that these three monsters made us absolute fools; Anyone like us who thought the base game was about to be a little too easy will breathe a sigh of relief at the start of this expansion, just moments before their entrails are used to decorate a nest.

Seregios quest was also one of the new fan missions, joining an NPC to eliminate a monster together. We expected things to be a little different considering how they look, but our fight alongside Arlow seemed almost as if it hadn’t been present for much of the time.

It’s probably due to our familiarity with playing with other online hunters, but we were a little disappointed that there was nothing more in this mode than having this NPC there. Other fan tasks may be more interesting (especially if they include fan favorites like Minoto or Hinoa), but as it stands, we left the meeting with a warm feeling.

The opposite is true for everything else we were able to put into practice, however. New quality of life features, such as Swap Scrolls, that allow you to switch between two on-the-fly switching skills, your different on-screen moves, and Dango’s new options are important enough to elevate your Sunbreak experience to feel like a true refinement of what Rise introduced. Not only does it look like more missions and a higher difficulty ceiling, but it looks like an update to the whole game that brings more to the table than you might reasonably expect for a piece (a big, expensive piece, of course) of DLC.

Aside from the small disappointment with the Follower Quest, our biggest complaint after our time with the game is how short that time was; We think we’ve only been able to see the smaller part of what this new DLC offers, and we can’t wait to try more.

Simply put, it’s more Monster Hunter, but more than new monsters and new missions: it’s being set up as a comprehensive and essential upgrade for the Monster Hunter Rise experience.
