Predicted XI vs. Crystal Palace: James Garner will finally have his chance

James Garner could take part in Manchester United’s pre-season tour for the first time on Tuesday when the Reds face Crystal Palace in Melbourne.

It has been widely reported that coach Erik ten Hag wants to take a close look at Garner on the tour before deciding whether he should return on loan or whether he can play a role in United’s squad next season.

But an injury picked up in training ruled out England’s under-21 international for the first two games of the tour, against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

It is possible that if Garner is given one of the two deep midfield positions, usually occupied by Scott McTominay and Fred, the other will also change.

Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage have shone in these roles when they came on as substitutes against both Liverpool and Melbourne, so one of them could also be offered a start. We suggest Iqbal, but there is a case for both.

Elsewhere on the field, David de Gea and Raphael Varane should return from their minor blows. Ten Hag will probably want to see the Varane / Maguire partnership in action, so Victor Lindelof will likely return to the bench.

Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot should continue their roles in the defensive positions.

In front, after an impressive substitute appearance against Melbourne, Marcus Rashford could replace Anthony Elanga on the left side, with Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial continuing their good start to the tour.

However, there may be some surprises up the sleeve of Ten Hag.

Wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho and gifted Hannibal Mejbri have yet to have a minute on the tour and could take part.

In addition, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has only been seen briefly in the second half against Liverpool and could also be prepared to see more minutes on the pitch.

That said, here is our planned lineup to face us at the Palace. The start is Tuesday at 11:10 a.m. BST.
