Qantas announces flight cuts, Jetstar CEO will leave

Qantas has announced that it will further reduce domestic flights to help combat rising fuel prices while Jetstar CEO Gareth Evans will step down at the end of the year.

Qantas revealed the news in a commercial update, saying it will reduce an additional 5% of domestic flights during the months of July, August and September. This adds to a 10% reduction announced in May.

The carrier also announced that up to 19,000 employees across the group will be offered a $ 5,000 payment as the carrier continues to recover financially from the pandemic. Qantas revealed a $ 1.5 billion drop in net debt over the past six months.

The single payment comes as part of efforts to keep staff in the midst of growing passenger frustrations about the airline.

The boost, which will cost the group $ 87 million, will only be for Qantas workers covered by business bargaining agreements. Management and senior executives are not eligible for payment.

Workers will only receive payment after a new business agreement has been blocked and eligibility conditions will apply. 4,000 Qantas workers covered by nine agreements already completed should receive payment soon.

Qantas chief Alan Joyce said the single payment was indicative that the airline shared the benefits of the bounce of the trip, which began in December, and to “recognize the great work.” [staff] they are doing “.

“Today, we are announcing a single payment that serves in part to recognize the sacrifices our people have made, including long periods without work and no annual salary increases,” he said.
