Quartararo was fighting for second place with the Aprilia Aleix Espargaro when he lost the front of his Yamaha while overtaking the Spaniard on the fork of turn 5 on the fifth lap of 26.
The Yamaha rider rode the last one with a damaged bike, while Espargaro lost 8.1 seconds recovering through the gravel before snatching fourth on the last lap with an overtaking on the last Brad Binder and Jack Miller curve.
Quartararo entered the pits on lap nine before returning to the circuit, but crashed again when he came out of turn 5 three laps later.
It was the first withdrawal of the world champion since Valencia 2020 and has seen his points advantage reduced from 34 to 21 at the start of the summer break.
Speaking to Canal + after the race, Quartararo criticized his “stupid mistake” and says he restarted the race because his team told him that if it rained and the bike had to be changed.
“I made a beginner mistake, I wanted to push too hard from the start,” Quartararo said. “It is with these mistakes that we learn for the future, but it was a very stupid mistake.
“We could have set a very good pace and fight for victory. These are mistakes you learn from in the future.
“I wanted to restart and try to add some points, but I saw that the bike was a problem. I stopped, the team told me to restart in case of rain but when I restarted I could see that something was wrong.
“I tried but I don’t know, we have to analyze the accident but I lost my back a bit abruptly, so we’ll see what they say. I made a beginner mistake “.

Quartararo, who went to apologize to Espargaro after the race, also said the Aprilia rider should have been “the winner” today given the pace he had.
When asked why he went to the Espargaró garage, he said: “To apologize, because today’s winner was him for the pace he had.
“Just to apologize for my mistake. He did a very good race.
“We were wrong on this track, but our potential is there, so I hope the same thing happens as in previous races. See me. “
