Queensland caravan parks are approaching capacity as desperate tenants settle

Queensland caravan park owners say they have been forced to evict desperate tenants as more people flock to holiday accommodation in search of a home.

The lack of available rental property means that many Queensland residents and families are dumped in caravan parkings, and some are reaching their capacity.

Ashanya Palms Holiday Village’s Tanya Forster said many had walked through the park while looking for safer options.

“They are often moving for a month in the short term, but then they could last for three months, sometimes up to six months trying to find a place to rent or even to buy,” he said.

“We’ve allocated about 60 of our vacation cabins to short-term rentals, plus we have long-term rentals, but we just don’t have enough.”

Monique Clark made the decision to move to Gold Coast Holiday Park recently.

He said one of the biggest challenges was finding availability.

“I was worried because we had been, well, I didn’t know what we were going to do because we had to move out of the house where we were,” Clark said.

Some caravan parkings report receiving 40 calls a day from people desperate for a roof over their head, and most have been forced to reject people because it reaches their capacity.

Ona Berghan-Wiley of Ingenia Rentals said the park has opened new cabins to keep up with demand.

“As soon as they were built, they were taken immediately,” he said.

“We’ve had an increase in hosting inquiries over the last two months.”
