Reaction: The PS5 and PS4 reboot of PS Plus is welcome and smart

The PS Plus All Games list, which currently spans over 800 games if you pay for PS Plus Premium, is pretty amazing. Sony had promised about 700 games before the launch of its renewed subscription, so we already had an idea of what to expect, but seeing it all in the PS Store is revealing. For an annual fee of £ 99.99 / $ 119.99, about twice the price of the mandatory PS Plus Essential frontier, here’s a lot of money. Is it the best offer in games? Well, let’s not go that route.

In fact, it would be easy to make comparisons with Team in Green’s dominant subscription strategy, and we have no doubt that the comments will take a turn in that direction, regardless of what we write here. But it’s important to remember that Sony has a different approach to its subscriptions: PS Plus is essential to the organization’s business, but it’s not the only goal – it’s moving in a different direction than its competitors. For this reason, we prefer to look at the new levels for what they are rather than what they are not; ultimately, consumers will determine the success of the PlayStation path.

PS Plus Extra demonstrates the importance of catalogs

And there’s no doubt that PS Plus Extra specifically has great value for money, especially if you’re a new PS5 or PS4 owner. Although its catalog of approximately 414 games shares many similarities with the now defunct PS Now, the library has been renovated in the right way. Sony hasn’t included new games like Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, but it has added bestsellers like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, popular releases that still work well in retail. .

It is this inclusion of top names that elevates the service above PS Now and makes it more attractive overall. The likes of Returnal and Demon’s Souls, two PS5 exclusives that attracted wrinkled eyebrows at $ 69.99 / £ 69.99, will find new fans as part of PS Plus Extra, and pay just £ 33 / $ 40 more of your traditional PS Plus Essential. subscription to access both (and hundreds more) for an entire year. Obviously, at this time of rising gas prices, it’s still a considerable amount of money, but we think Sony has the price right here – it’s a bit of a simple sale.

To be fair, if you’re the type of enthusiast who frequents a place like Push Square, the library may be less appealing as a result of buying many of the main titles on the first day at full price. And this is an area where the new levels of PS Plus fall short, because Sony has already said that big exclusives like God of War Ragnarok will not be launched into the service. But it’s absolutely imperative to remember that not all players invest as much in their consoles; most players only buy a handful of new releases each year.

And this is where the importance of catalogs comes into play. There’s an undeniable appeal to first-day releases, but there’s also an inherent value in a compelling library of games you can enjoy on demand, and Sony has done just that. Whether it’s Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption 2 or God of War, there are dozens and dozens of important titles available to play at the new PS Plus Extra level, with the promise of adding more each month. Consider old basics like the monthly PS Plus Essential games and the PS Plus collection, and it’s hard to complain.

PS Plus Premium will need reinforcement

Where things get less convincing is in PS Plus Premium, which is cluttered in a messy way. Here are a number of additional perks, ranging from cloud streaming to classic games, but it lacks the PS Plus Extra level cohesion. For example, Sony has decided to include remasters here, such as The Last of Us Remastered, which makes it a bit confusing overall. The promise of PS1 and PSP emulation is certainly appealing, but the results are mixed and the selection is tiny right now – everything seems a bit pointless.

Sony, of course, also continues to pay for the mistakes it made more than 15 years ago with the heavy-handed architecture of the PS3; while armchair analysts argue that it is possible to emulate the latest generation console on the PS5, the reality is that it has not yet succeeded and therefore cloud transmission is needed to play titles like Tokyo Jungle and Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time. Despite being one of the first in the cloud transmission space (it had a big advantage like Google Stadia), the tech giants have largely left it now. However, the quality of cloud transmission has improved lately and is quietly robust these days, although your mileage may vary.

Perhaps the key detail here is that PS Plus Premium is only £ 16 / $ 20 more than PS Plus Extra, and adds 388 more games to play, which is ultimately impressive value. It’s another example of Sony getting the right price; the additional sale is fairly straightforward, and while we don’t fully recommend the top level until the classics catalog is expanded, it won’t break the bank if you’re already paid for PS Plus Extra to move to the top level. Ultimately, we believe Sony will have a lot of success turning committed PS Plus Essential members to higher levels, because the value is hard to argue with.

The renewal of PS Plus is just beginning

Of course, it’s important to remember that what’s here today, as we write this article, is just the beginning. Clearly, Sony has made a monumental effort to unify its subscriptions and transition members accordingly, but the real work begins now. The library, as it stands, is strong, but there needs to be a clear roadmap and cadence. We’d like to see PS Plus Premium, and specifically its catalog of classics, find more of an identity – there needs to be a consistent flow of additions to all older PlayStation consoles (including the PS2) to make that level more attractive in general.

And while we appreciate that the Japanese giant is adopting a different strategy from its rivals, there needs to be value in PS Plus Extra beyond the older games you’ve perhaps already played. Confirmation that the highly anticipated indie Stray will be added to the release is a good start, and we’d love to see more of the firm in this first year; adding anticipated and exciting Indians and smaller releases on the first day would increase the value of the global catalog, which is already important and full of quality content.

However, this new dawn for PS Plus is welcome. Sony’s subscriptions, while always value for money, had begun to stagnate, especially in the face of intense competition. A reoriented approach had been delayed, and now it has finally arrived, we are excited to see how it matures. Clearly, for many PlayStation fans, PS Plus is one of the most important products the manufacturer offers. With this renewal, we hope it will bring a renewed focus and investment to the service and its different levels, which can only mean good news for members, both new and old.
