Real Madrid have reached an agreement of 100 million euros (85.3 million pounds) to sign defensive midfielder Aurelién Tchouaméni from Monaco. The European champions have to pay 80 million euros guaranteed by the 22-year-old and the rest in supplements.
Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are among the teams that chased the French international. Jürgen Klopp called on Tchouaméni in hopes of convincing him to move to Anfield but the player was only interested in Madrid. PSG abandoned negotiations last weekend on this basis, after being willing to pay the highest fee with 100 million euros guaranteed.
Madrid have made great strides in talks with Monaco on Monday night and have agreed a contract with Tchouaméni until 2027. This is in effect shortly before the Champions League final.
Tchouaméni, who played for Bordeaux before joining Monaco in January 2020 for around £ 16 million, is the latest player bought by Madrid to refresh a bright but aged midfielder. Defensive midfielder Casemiro is 30, Luka Modric is 36 and Toni Kroos is 32. Tchouaméni joins his French teammate Eduardo Camavinga, 19, at the Bernabeu. Confirmation of a new one-year deal for Modric is set to be announced on Wednesday.
The sale of Tchouaméni by Monaco comes four years after receiving 180 million euros from Kylian Mbappé of PSG. They have also sold Thomas Lemar, Fabinho, Youri Tielemans, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy in bids worth 45 million euros or more since 2017.
