Liz Truss last night said recession in Britain was “not inevitable” as she claimed her plan to cut taxes could avert an economic downturn.
In the final televised debate of the Tory leadership campaign, the Foreign Secretary cast doubt on the Bank of England’s predictions of a recession and defended her plans for a multi-billion pound stimulus for the economy
But she was attacked by Rishi Sunak, her rival, who said the Conservative Party needed to “get real and fast”.
He said: “The lights on the economy are flashing red and the main cause is inflation. I am concerned that Liz Truss’ plans will make the situation worse.
“It is not the tax burden that is causing the recession. This is simply wrong.” During the Sky News debate
