Reopens Michigan’s Abbott Baby Formula Plant: How Long Before Parents See More Supply?

Baby formula maker Abbott Laboratories resumed production Saturday at its Sturgis, Michigan plant, which has been closed since February.

Abbott said it will first produce EleCare and other specialized and metabolic formulas that will be available to consumers on June 20th. The company added that it will restart production of Similac and other formulas as soon as it can.

The company reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration after a voluntary withdrawal that has contributed to the shortage of infant formula across the country.

He plant in Sturgis, Michigan it closed in February and several powdered formula marks were removed after four babies contracted bacterial infections, which resulted in hospitalizations and two deaths. Abbott has denied that his plant was responsible for the infections, saying that the samples of sick babies do not match the strains of bacteria found in the plant.

Abbott did not maintain sanitary conditions or procedures at the plant, according to findings released in March by federal security inspectors.

The FDA is under scrutiny to find out why it took more than three months to reconnect the Michigan plant.

The Biden administration has traveled to Europe and Mexico to import millions of pounds of infant formula to alleviate the shortage that is expected to last until the summer.

Abbott did not keep the clean surfaces used to produce and handle the powdered formula, according to the FDA inspection. In addition, inspectors found a history of contamination with the bacteriaknown as cronobacter, which includes eight cases between the fall of 2019 and February of this year.

“We apologize to all the families we have been disappointed with since our voluntary withdrawal aggravated our country’s infant formula shortage,” Ford wrote, stressing that he believed the withdrawal was the right one.
