Residents rescued from condominiums as massive fire destroys Saskatoon building

Saskatoon firefighters rescued people in a condominium building in the Sutherland neighborhood overnight as crews battled an out-of-control fire.

Crews arrived at the scene around midnight, the Saskatoon Fire Department said in a press release Saturday morning.

Officials said the roof of the three-story building at 108th Street and Bryans Avenue was completely on fire.

In an update at 5 a.m., the fire department said firefighters were still on the scene extinguishing the flames and checking for hot spots.

Firefighters rescued several people from their condominiums, officials said.

Several buildings on 108 W Street were also evacuated and the road was completely cut off from traffic.

Major Mike Hoeft, Saskatchewan Salvation Army Area Area Commander, told CBC News that the organization organized hotel rooms for 12 families displaced by the fire Saturday.

“We work with the fire department for any need, whether accommodation or temporary accommodation or meals,” Hoeft said.

Hoeft did not have the exact number of people assisted, however, he said the Salvation Army will continue to provide support until insurance or other funding is initiated.

The fire brigade did not say if anyone was injured in the blaze.

The department said it responded with six fire trucks, two ladder trucks and a rescue unit.

His mobile emergency command unit, along with two firefighters and a battalion chief, arrived at the scene within an hour.

Around 1 a.m., firefighters also warned of smoke drift in the area and advised residents to close the windows.
