RIP Chris Evans’ iPhone 6S

I think most of us here at The Verge can agree that if we were famous celebrities who acted in some of the highest grossing movies of all time, we would always be with the latest and greatest technology. Apparently, that’s not how Chris Evans, star of Lightyear and The Avengers, happens: on June 23, 2022, he posted a message on Twitter and Instagram that he’s finally updating his phone: “RIP iPhone 6S,” he said. “We’ve had a good race.”

In his posts, Evan says he’ll miss the device’s home button in 2015, a photo he posted shows he’s updating what appears to be an iPhone 13 Pro, but not the fact that it was a “night battle.” trying to get the 6S to load. (In comments to Evan’s Instagram post, actress Octavia Spencer of Hidden Figures and Onward says she also just switched to a phone without a home button.) She also mentions that the grainy images won’t be lost of the 6S’s 12-megapixel camera. – You can see examples on his entire Instagram page.

To be clear, this post doesn’t embarrass Evans for having an old phone; in fact, I would say the 6S is the best phone Apple has ever made, with its perfect retention capability, headphone jack and second generation. Touch ID. I have nothing but respect for Evans to continue using it. However, it was probably time to upgrade; Apple recently announced that the next version of iOS will not support the 6S, which has continued to receive software updates for seven years. Also, the 6S had no wireless charging, which means that when the Lightning port starts to wear out, you’re out of luck.

Real heroes don’t upgrade unless they absolutely need to

Fortunately, the new Evans phone almost certainly supports wireless charging. Maybe it can make this last even longer.

PS: I find it very funny that Evans starred in an Apple TV show in 2020, but then continued to use the 6S. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis has said Apple gave him a pair of AirPods Max for free; I’m pretty sure Evans could have upgraded an iPhone XR or SE if I really wanted to. He talks about loyalty.

PPS: Spoiler alert, but remember that time Chris Evans had to use an Android phone in Knives Out because supposedly Apple wouldn’t allow the bad guy in the movie to use an iPhone? Very funny.

Correction June 24, 1:47 PM ET: The original version of this article said that Evans’ post was June 25. It was actually the 23rd. Sorry for the mistake.
