Rishi Sunak has opened the door to further spending to further alleviate the cost of living crisis, but vowed not to transfer debt to the country’s children.

The chancellor defended himself as a “fiscal conservative” as the Conservatives split over his £ 21bn package announced yesterday, which is funded in part by loans and in part by an extraordinary tax.

But he said it was right to act when families were facing “acute distress.”
