FRANKFURT –
Russia’s war in Ukraine could take years, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a German weekly, adding that the supply of state-of-the-art weapons to Ukrainian troops would increase the chances of liberate the Donbas region from Russian control.
“We must prepare for the passing of years. We must not stop supporting Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told Bild am Sonntag. “Even if the costs are high, not only because of military support, but also because of rising energy and food prices.”
A NATO summit in Madrid is expected later this month to agree on a package of assistance to Ukraine that will help the country move from former Soviet-era weapons to standard equipment. ‘NATO,’ Stoltenberg said earlier this week.
Ukraine promised on Saturday that it would prevail in Moscow while fighting Russian assaults near a key eastern city and several sites were attacked with projectiles and missiles.
Russian forces were defeated in March in an attempted assault on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Since then, Russia has relocated to the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
