With Samsung’s upcoming UnPacked event expected to be just around the corner, many are wondering what the Korean electronics giant will reveal. On a recent visit to Indonesia, Samsung’s president and head of MX business, TM Roh, shed some light on the folding phone space, along with the company’s vision for the coming years.
Fast-growing folding
Given recent global sales figures, the popularity of the folding form factor will increase in 2023. In 2021, the volume of foldable smartphones sold grew more than four times than in 2020. This exceeded growth forecasts. of the market for three times! Roh added that in just one month, sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 surpassed total cumulative sales of folding phones throughout 2020.
Roh believes that mobile phones with folding screens are reshaping the mobile market, as is the Galaxy Note with its large screen:
We will continue to develop the unique benefits of Galaxy folders, such as viewing on a large screen with a compact and durable device, taking photos and videos in Flex mode, doing multiple tasks on split screens with an S Pen and enjoying a user experience unique with the new folding form factor.
One challenge with folding is that the hardware is only half the equation, as the software also needs to be optimized. It’s good to see that Google, the maker of the Android operating system, is working closely with Samsung to support more apps and services.

Now that Samsung has laid the groundwork for high-speed 5G connectivity, Roh says the company is focusing on building an ecosystem that can reap the benefits. He sees Galaxy smartphones as the “centerpiece” of an integrated mobile universe, connecting seamlessly with the Galaxy Watch and Bud wearables, and offering experiences similar to those with Galaxy and Samsung DEX tablets.
And since not everyone can afford a premium folding phone, Samsung continues its commitment to mid-range smartphones such as the Galaxy A series:
… We are able to maintain the affordability of our mid-range smartphones while providing a great mobile experience, as we focus on strengthening the specifications of priority product features such as battery, memory, performance and 5G capabilities.
A force for good
Roh sees the importance of sustainability in the future of the world and new practices are being applied to Samsung products: “I always emphasize the importance of sustainability in everything we do, from the way we design, manufacture and recover materials throughout the product life cycle .to protect our planet “.
Samsung has also been expanding its Galaxy for the Planet initiative, which includes the use of eco-friendly materials, such as post-consumer recycled plastics. Galaxy smartphones and tablets introduced last year, for example, used components that contained 20% recycled plastic destined for the ocean from discarded fishing nets.
Roh also talked about how Samsung continues to work toward its vision for 2025 by raising the voices of young leaders and those responsible for change around the world. Named Generation17, and in collaboration with the United Nations Development Project, the group aims to advance the change towards a better and more sustainable future by achieving 17 global goals.
“The reason we at Samsung need to advocate for a more open world is that our future demands it. Our younger consumers want personal and authentic experiences as a way to express themselves and create new opportunities. We feel proud to allow a world where technology connects us and inspires us all. “
