Samsung’s ‘Dream Team’ to focus on the new chipset, the Galaxy S23 omits Exynos

Last week, it was rumored that Samsung had decided to build a new high-end custom processor for the Galaxy S series. your iPhones.

A new report today states that Samsung has created a ‘Dream Team’ to work on this project. Such is the intensity of the focus on this project that it has been decided not to launch a new Exynos processor in 2023 and 2024. This would mean that the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S24 will not have an Exynos chipset.

Samsung may not make a new high-end Exynos chip in 2023 and 2024

The report comes out of South Korea and states that Samsung will launch a dedicated team for this project in July with about 1,000 employees. Its job is to market the first Galaxy-only chipset in 2025. Samsung sees it as a crucial project to improve its competitiveness in non-memory semiconductors.

Named the “Deam Platform One Team”, this joint working group has reportedly begun preparations for its official launch. TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, and Park Yong-in, head of Samsung’s LSI division, jointly lead this working group. This sleep time will include a large number of engineers who have developed the Exynos chipsets in the System LSI division and those who have coordinated the installation of the Exynos chipsets in the mobile division.

The Exynos is more of a general purpose chip, as Samsung also supplies it to other manufacturers. This is not the case with Apple’s M1, which is used exclusively for the company’s own devices. Samsung’s Exynos chips have struggled to compete with Qualcomm’s flagships.

Although Samsung abandoned the idea of custom CPU cores a couple of years ago, a partnership with AMD for mobile graphics was not enough to improve the fortunes of the Exynos 2200. Samsung’s own Galaxy S22 series uses more Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips compared to the Exynos 2200.

This new chipset that Samsung is working on will remain exclusive to the company’s devices. Maybe we see it in the folders too. The rumor that Samsung will not launch a new Exynos chipset in 2023 and 2024 is shocking. This would mean that their flagship Galaxy S23 and S24 will make full use of Qualcomm chips.

Samsung wants to focus entirely on this new project and launch in 2025 a new chip that will blow the competition out of the water. Sure, you can expect it to do so, but given Samsung’s track record with high-end chipsets, it would be best to cross your fingers.

Update: A Samsung spokesman shared the following statement: “While we are constantly interacting with customers to develop competitive mobile processors, no specific decision has been made.”
