The Montreal Canadiens have signed goalkeeper Samuel Montembeault for a two-year, one-way contract extension.
Montembeault was a waiver claim from Montreal before the 2021-22 season, and removed him from the Florida Panthers organization. With Carey Price’s injury and Cayden Primeau’s struggles at the NHL level, Montembeault ended up starting 30 games, by far most of his NHL career.
Since his time in the fold, he had a record of 8-18-6, an average savings percentage of 0.891 of his career and 0.09 goals saved above average for every 60 minutes of time five against five.
Price’s status is back on the air this year and we’ve been hearing reports from teams interested in acquiring Jake Allen. The move to sign Montembeault ensures the Canadians will have at least one goalie to play in the NHL next season, and if Allen stays, they can let Primeau build the confidence he won in the AHL playoffs for another season with the Laval Rocket.
EDIT: For Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic, the deal is worth a million dollars a year.
