Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP says a 57-year-old Saskatchewan man died in a crash involving a train immediately before a derailment Thursday afternoon.
Police first issued a press release at 1:30 p.m., saying a train had derailed three miles west of Edgeley, Sask., On the 2154 network, about a mile north of Highway 364.
The village is located about 50 miles northeast of Regina.
At 20:25, the RCMP issued an updated press release stating that a preliminary investigation had determined that the eastbound train had collided with a maintenance vehicle traveling south on a level crossing.
The accident happened immediately before the train derailed, around noon, according to police.
A 57-year-old man from the rural town of Lajord, southeast of Regina, was driving the road maintenance vehicle.
The RCMP said he was pronounced dead at the scene and his family has been notified.
No other injuries were reported to police.
Details of the number of derailed train cars and how the derailment occurred are not yet known.
Fort Qu’Appelle, Indian Head and White Butte RCMP responded immediately to the scene, along with the Canadian National Police, a private service that protects the staff and property of the railway company.
The RCMP says CN police are still investigating the scene and will offer more updates to the media.
