Saskatchewan is expanding coverage of Trikafta, a drug for cystic fibrosis (CF). From August 1, Trikafta will be available for patients with CF aged six years or older who meet medical criteria.

“We are excited to be able to expand the coverage of this treatment for Saskatchewan children with cystic fibrosis,” said Health Minister Paul Merriman. “We know that Trikafta has been shown to improve patients’ quality of life, and this expanded coverage will help children with CF and their families for years to come.”

Trikafta targets specific genetic mutations that cause CF; this mutation affects approximately 90% of CF patients.

“Today’s news will change the trajectory of the disease and the future of many Saskatchewan children living with cystic fibrosis,” said Kelly Grover, president and CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “Saskatchewan was one of the first provinces to fund the drug for 12 years and over last year, and today it has continued to recognize Trikafta’s extraordinary transformative value, expanding Trikafta’s coverage to include children ages six to 11. “We celebrate this news together with our CF community in Saskatchewan, which has worked tirelessly for this day.”
