This fall, a repeated 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro could be on the list. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, author of the Power On newsletter for subscribers only, reports that he expects Apple to update both iPad models with the M2 chip in September or October.
Gurman expects the new iPads to have the new M2 chip announced at last week’s WWDC 2022 developer conference, in addition to wireless charging and a camera system upgrade. There is no explicit mention of when the new iPads could debut. But based on previous years, Apple could make the announcements at the same time as introducing the new iPhone.
We already knew that an iPad larger than 14.1 inches with the M2 chip inside is on its way. There has been talk even before Apple raised the curtain on the M2 processor. But we probably won’t see this model until at least 2023.
You may want to consider reserving cash if you haven’t already upgraded to the iPad Pro with the Apple M1. Some new features such as Mac, including Stage Manager, only work with Apple’s M-Series chip. Gurman says:
I haven’t had a chance to use it on the iPad because the feature strangely requires an M1 model and doesn’t work on the iPad A12Z from 2020. Apple’s M2 processor would theoretically make the iPad Pro better prepared to act in a similar way to the Mac. The M2 is faster and has more memory bandwidth, a must when displaying applications between different screens, which is what helps you make Stage Manager. It supports up to 24 GB of RAM, a specification you would normally find on a laptop. The M2 also has a 10-core GPU, compared to the M1’s eight cores.
It will probably be safe to wait until the summer for a new iPad release later this spring, especially if you’ve been waiting to upgrade for a long time. Although it is also possible that Apple will wait until next year before rolling out a repeat iPad Pro model, as the new iPad Pro M1 is only available for purchase from last spring.
