Serial sex offender Gary Butcher arrested after escaping from Lincolnshire prison

A serial sex offender who escaped from an open prison has been arrested after three days on the run.

Gary Butcher was serving a life sentence for burglary at HMP North Sea Camp in Lincolnshire. The 55-year-old also has multiple convictions for sexual assault on women.

He was arrested in the Swadlincote area of ​​Derbyshire shortly before 11.30pm on Friday after approaching an officer and surrendering.

Butcher escaped from prison on Tuesday and will now be returned to a closed prison while investigations continue.

A 56-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of assisting a criminal and remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachael Cox said: “After a 24-hour investigation into the arrest of Butcher, I am delighted to say that we have now arrested this man.

“At the moment, we do not believe that he has committed any more crimes.

“Our call has been very well received by the public, and we are very grateful for that, and we would like to thank everyone who shared our call or provided information.

“This was a very collaborative effort with our officers and staff who worked tirelessly with neighboring forces and partner agencies to arrest Butcher.”
