Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills and Caledon and warns that the possibility of a tornado cannot be ruled out.

According to a bulletin issued by the government agency, conditions are favorable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms this afternoon and evening (July 24). The main threat with these storms is damaging wind gusts. Large hail and torrential rain are minor threats and a tornado is a possibility.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury,” the bulletin said. “Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees, and take large vehicles off the road. Severe lightning is likely with any storm that develops. Remember that severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flooding flash floods and road flooding. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. When thunder roars, go home!

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watches when atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of thunderstorms that may produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rain.

The Office of the Fire and Emergency Management recommends that you take shelter immediately if threatening weather is approaching.
