Chief Electoral Officer Stephane Perrault speaks at a news conference on Elections Canada’s report of recommendations for the 43rd and 44th general elections in Ottawa on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.
The Electoral Director of Canada recommends that changes be made to the law to combat foreign interference in elections and the spread of misinformation.
Stéphane Perrault is calling for a new crime of making false statements to undermine an election, for example, alleging that the results have been manipulated.
A report released today also suggests that lawmakers ban hate groups from registering as political parties, which would give them the names and addresses of all voters.
The report calls for an update on electoral laws in the digital age and suggests that platforms should publish policies on how to treat misleading content to voters.
It also suggests stricter rules to prevent third-party groups that support political parties or seek to influence the election from receiving funding from abroad.
The report suggests that MPs are extending the current rules designed to stop foreign interference during elections until the period before the start of the campaign.
