Last year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced that Sora from Kingdom Hearts would be the last character on the list of fighting games. But that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to add their own favorites to the game. Yesterday, a fan posted a mod that allows Smash players to turn Hero into Chrono Trigger’s Chrono Trigger. And it looks good enough to have been an official DLC (h / t: Event Hubs).
According to the description on Pik’s modification page, the modification adds Crono as seven alternate costumes for Dragon Quest Hero. The mod also turns Heroi’s “Magic Burst” (his bass special) into a green spell called Luminaire. The modder chose to keep the Hero’s skill name in order to avoid confusing Hero’s network. The mod even includes a custom Chrono suit for Kirby, which is transformed whenever an enemy is swallowed. While making his own 3D sculpture, Pik also hired other modders for fabric pairing, headband physics, and scripts.
Pik is an experienced modder who has made appearances for other characters such as Ninten from the Mother series, Pokémon Gold, the original protagonist of Harvest Moon, and Link from the original game The Legend of Zelda. Most of his creations are quite retro, or are earlier versions of modern Nintendo characters.
Chrono Trigger is a classic role-playing game that was originally released in 1995. If you don’t have an SNES, you can still play it on the PC port on Steam. Crono stars in its silent protagonist, and fights with spells called “Techs”. Luminaire is a light spell that damages several enemies, and is the strongest Crono skill in the game. Therefore, it is fitting that Pik chose to modify it to his fan-made skin.
For years, I had to hear how players complained when their favorite character didn’t get on the Smash list. It’s great that Pik was willing to take matters into his own hands.
