Smooth FM robs young Triple J listeners to cross over with the best result

Smooth FM has ended its first decade of broadcasting with its best radio poll result, gaining 9% of Melbourne’s audience during the week, more than 7.3% of the poll previous.

Smooth, owned by Nova Entertainment, boasts that it is “the first Australian radio station to be programmed based on mood (music format to feel good) rather than an era or genre with chosen speakers to complement the music format “.

Bryce Mills of Triple J and Ebony Boadu and Simon Diaz of Smooth FM.

The second largest increase in new listeners was among young people between the ages of 18 and 24, where the share of the station went from 4.5% to 7.6%.

It seems that many of these listeners come from the ABC youth station Triple J, which fell 6.6 points from 21% to 14.4%, as younger listeners seem to have discovered the pleasure of listening easily. Over the seven days, Triple J fell from 5.6% to 4.5.

On the AM dial, ABC morning show presenter Sammy J regained some ground after a difficult start to the year, adding 0.3 points to a 9 percent audience share. who listened to the band on weekdays from 5.30 to 9.00.

Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft at 3AW, owned by Nine, the publisher of this masthead, added 0.5 points to increase their share to 19.4%, making sure they ended up in the family position again. Melbourne’s most listened to presenters.

Stable teammate Neil Mitchell, however, suffered a 1-point drop, ending a 17.5 percent share of the total audience. That result still left him comfortably in second place, with an average of 132,000 listeners between 9 a.m. and noon, just behind Russ and Ross ’average of 147,000. Scores are distributed in time slots instead of specific programs, which means there is a bit of overlap between shows.

Nine was pleased with his results, despite Mitchell’s small drop. “Ross, Russ and Neil Mitchell have managed to keep up with the massive numbers that tune in every morning,” said Greg Byrnes, head of content for Nine Radio.

Out of the titans of the AM conversation, the most listened-to presenter on Melbourne radio was Toni Tenaglia of Gold FM (90,000 listeners), who marginally outscored stable mate Craig Huggins (89,000) by 9am and noon. Next was Virginia Trioli on ABC Melbourne, with an average of 71,000 listeners (up from the previous 76,000).
