Sony’s free PS Plus games for August are the best in a long time.

Sony often disappoints when it comes to the free PlayStation Plus line of titles it offers up to its Essential subscriber level.
Sure, there’s usually at least one good game out of the three they put out every month, but it’s often just decent and lumped in with two that are boring or bland or just plain bad. Not always, of course. Some months are very good.
Few months are as good as August 2022. The PS Plus lineup is one of the best I’ve seen.
Here’s what you’re getting this coming month, available to download on Tuesday, August 2:
Yakuza: Like a Dragon | PS4, PS5
With an 86% on OpenCritic and a near-perfect user score on Steam, Yakuza: Like A Dragon is a critical success, a fan favorite, and one of the highest-rated PS Plus games of the year. (It’s also free on Xbox Game Pass).
Jump into the mean streets of modern-day Japan as Ichiban Kasuga, a low-level yakuza gangster, and explore this quirky RPG full of endearing characters, silly fights, and wild superpowers. What a treat for PS Plus subscribers.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle | PS4, PS5
I gave this remake of the first two Tony Hawk Pro Skater games a glowing review when it came out. It’s a lovely, loving remake of some of my favorite games from when I was too poor to even have my own console, but would go play with friends on theirs. We got pretty good at all that rail grinding and flipping. I’m pretty bad now. Remarkably, this game scores an 89% on OpenCritic, beating Yakuza by a hair.
Little nightmares | PS4

If you were to combine horror themes with a sense of whimsy and package it all into a charming and rather beautiful platformer, you’d get Little Nightmares.
This one gets a 79% on OpenCritic and is very well received by Steam players, so it’s not quite the critical success of the previous two, but it still ranks very well for a PS Plus giveaway. I have played it and enjoyed it a lot. It’s not exactly a horror game, but it’s certainly creepy.
And those are your August PlayStation Plus titles in what I consider to be the best lineup since. . . I don’t know when When they gave away Bloodborne maybe. What a great month!
