Sony’s PlayStation Store, starting next month, will eliminate access to hundreds of Studiocanal movie titles that customers in Germany and Austria had previously purchased.
The move comes a year after Sony’s PlayStation group stopped offering purchases and rentals of movies and TV shows, starting August 31, 2021, citing the rise of video streaming services. At the time, Sony assured customers that “they can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store to play on demand on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices.” But obviously that didn’t mean forever.
PlayStation posted warnings about the imminent removal of Studiocanal content for German and Austrian customers on its website.
“As of August 31, 2022, due to our evolving licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to view your previously acquired Studio Canal content and it will be removed from your video library.” say the warnings. “Thank you very much for your continued support.” The German website 4KFilme previously reported the removal of the movies by PlayStation Store.
It’s unclear whether PlayStation Store will reimburse customers for their movie purchases that will no longer be available; a Sony representative declined to provide any details in this regard. Studiocanal’s representatives for the Germany-Austria region had not responded to a request for comment.
The list of titles distributed by Studiocanal that will be removed includes 314 in Germany and 137 in Austria.
These include Studiocanal-funded films such as “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”, the two films from “Paddington”, “Non Stop” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”. In addition, titles that will no longer be available to PlayStation Store customers in Germany and Austria include several Lionsgate movies, including the “Hunger Games” series, “John Wick” starring Keanu Reeves, and the “Saw” series. “.
