After nearly a decade of work on Warframe and more than five years since it canceled its latest project, Digital Extremes is working on a new game. On Saturday, the studio announced Soulframe, a free MMO set in a fantasy world. Outside of an enigmatic teaser trailer, Digital Extremes has only shared a few details about Soulframe.
In an interview with The Washington Post, creative director Geoff Crookes said the game is inspired by the classics The NeverEnding Story and Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki. Like the latter, Soulframe will explore what happens when humans collide with the natural world. “Vanity [in Soulframe] is that the world itself is a little angry at what has been done to it, and the terrain below tends to change throughout the day, “Crookes told The Post.” So there will be proceduralism in the networks of caves and crevices. , and so on under the world “.
From the game’s point of view, Soulframe focuses primarily on “slow and heavy” melee combat. Despite including “Soul” in the title, Crookes told The Post that his team did not set out to create a Soulslike when they began working on the project, although it became impossible to ignore FromSoftware’s latest masterpiece. . “Elden Ring has been absolutely the subject of conversation, perhaps to do with the camera, perhaps with how excellent his fighting pace is,” Soulframe co-director Steve Sinclair said. “And you know, fuck these guys, fuck, [Elden Ring] it was absolutely fantastic. “
Soulframe has no release date yet, and both Crookes and Sinclair stressed that the game is still in development, but as with Warframe, Digital Extremes plans to involve the community in the creation process. So expect frequent backstage Twitch broadcasts. In addition, some fans could receive early access to the game in a year.
