South Australia is preparing for severe weather with damaging winds, storms are expected

There is a severe weather warning for strong winds in much of South Australia.

Key points:

  • Harmful wind warnings have been issued in much of South Australia
  • Showers and storms are also expected to develop
  • Rainfall of between 20 and 40 mm is forecast for Adelaide on Monday

The Meteorological Office says a cold front moving from Western Australia will be strengthened on Sunday afternoon as it reaches western SA.

Harmful gusts of wind of more than 90 km / h have been forecast on the west coast and in the southern parts of the northwestern pastoral district, with showers and possible storms.

Simon Timcke of the Bureau of Meteorology said the “vigorous cold front” will continue eastward, reaching Adelaide in the evening and morning.

“We have the potential for some very windy conditions as this front moves and it will also bring showers and some isolated storms, which will also increase the chances of producing some strong winds,” he said.

Timcke said that while the risk of a severe storm in Adelaide was low, the region could expect a total of 20mm to 40mm of rain over the next few days.

The beaches of South Australia could also see above-average waves over the next few days.

“We have pretty big waves and high seas on the way,” Timcke said.

Emergency services have warned people to keep loose objects around their homes and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

The State Emergency Service will distribute free sandbags today in various parts of the state.

Mount Barker SES volunteers were busy filling sandbags today for collection.

“We expect a lot of rain, a lot of weather for the next few days, so it’s important to be prepared and be prepared for that,” Mel Crossing of SES said.
