Space telescope scientists James Webb prepare for first operational images: Listen today

Join for free on Wednesday (June 29) as NASA celebrates the upcoming end of the launch of its $ 10 billion next-generation space observatory.

In a series of conversations, the agency plans to discuss the James Webb Space Telescope and its goals to discover more about the early universe, objects from the solar system, exoplanets, and a number of interesting things about the universe.

NASA will broadcast the audio of the event, held in Baltimore at the Space Telescope Science Institute, starting at 10:00 EDT (1400 GMT). You can tune in here courtesy of NASA or directly on the agency’s website (opens in a new tab).

Participants include NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy and Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of the NASA Scientific Mission Directorate.

In addition, the event will include two panels. One will focus on scientific issues and the other will highlight the start-up process and design of the observatory.

The talks come two weeks before NASA reveals the first scientific-quality images from the observatory. This milestone will take place on July 12 at 10:30 EDT (14:30 GMT) and will be broadcast live over the Internet.

Webb was launched into space on December 25, 2021 and has been working to prepare each of its four scientific instruments for operation.

You can follow the “marking” list of instruments on NASA’s “Where’s Webb” website (opens in a new tab). The full list of Webb’s first cycle of observations is available on this website (opens in a new tab) from the Baltimore Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages Webb’s operations.
