STATEN ISLAND (WABC) – A ShopRite employee is arrested for assaulting former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Staten Island on Sunday.
Police say Daniel Gill, 39, slapped Giuliani on the back while handing out leaflets at the 3010 Veterans Road store on Staten Island.
Giuliani, 78, was not injured and denied medical treatment.
Gill faces a second-degree assault charge for hitting an elderly person.
Giuliani was at the ShopRite handing out pamphlets and taking pictures with people supporting his son, Andrew Giuliani’s candidacy for governor. Her son was not in the store and was campaigning elsewhere.
Andrew Giuliani issued a statement saying:
“Innocent people are being attacked in today’s New York all the time. This particular incident affected very close to home. The assault on my father, the mayor of the United States, was for politics. We will be intimidated by the attacks of the left, as governor I will defend the law and order so that New Yorkers feel safe again This message has resonated among voters throughout my campaign, up to the primaries of Tuesday”.
