Steve Martin on retirement after 60: ‘This is, strangely, this’

Legendary actor Steve Martin revealed Wednesday that he may retire after filming his show “Only Murders in the Building.”

Martin told the Hollywood Reporter that he will continue to star in the Hulu mystery comedy alongside Selena Gomez and Martin Short, but that he “will not be looking” for other acting roles after the series ends.

“When this TV show is over, I’m not looking for another one,” the 76-year-old said. “I will not look for other films. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, strangely, this.”

Starting his career as a comedy writer, Martin appeared in several iconic films such as “Father of the Bride”, “Cheaper by the Dozen”, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and many more.

Martin has also appeared on several television shows including “The Tonight Show,” “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” and “Saturday Night Live,” which he has hosted 15 times.

“Talent is amazing and impressive when you first meet it, but it has to improve and have a standard that it lives up to,” said “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, a very close friend of Martin’s. “Don’t worry when Steve is doing something. He won’t be happy until he breaks it. And even then, he won’t trust it.”

In addition to his hit show, which earned 17 Emmy nominations, Martin will publish his 12th book and is the subject of an upcoming documentary about his life with Oscar winner Morgan Neville for Apple TV+.

Along with those projects, Martin and his “Murders” co-star Martin Short, 72, have been touring their own comedy show, “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!”

“I think Steve learned the joy of collaboration,” Short said of his co-star. “Throughout his stand-up life, he was alone. Now, when he’s successful, he can celebrate with someone. And when something blows, he can actually laugh about it, instead of being alone with it.

“There can be a natural end — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty,” Martin said of his show.

Despite her booming career and “Only Murders in the Building” currently streaming on Hulu, Martin realizes there may be a point where things might slow down, especially since she’s raising a daughter of 9 years with his wife Anne Stringfield.

“I have a family life that’s a lot of fun,” Martin said. “To shoot a movie now, to go live somewhere else, I’m not ready to do it anymore. I can’t disappear for three months.

“My wife keeps saying, ‘You always say you’re going to retire and then you always come up with something,'” he added. “I’m not really interested in retiring. I am not. But I would work a little less. May be.”
