Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp has confirmed that his character Will Byers is gay.
In an interview with Variety, Schnapp talked about his character’s sexuality, along with plans for season 5 of the hit show.
“He’s 100% clear now that he’s gay and that he loves Mike,” he said before praising the handling of Will’s character development program. “But before, it was a slow arc. I think it’s done really well because it’s very easy to make a character gay all of a sudden.”

Schnapp then shared how the story has resonated among viewers of the show, recalling a specific encounter with a fan in Paris.
He said, “People have approached me, I was in Paris, and this 40-year-old man approached me and said,‘ Wow, this character from Will made me feel so good. And I related a lot to it.
“That was exactly who I was when I was little.” This made me very happy to hear it. They’re writing this real character and this real journey and real struggle and they’re doing really well. ”

Schnapp’s comments marked a shift from his previous thoughts about explicitly labeling his character’s sexuality.
“I feel like they never treat him or say blatantly what Will is like,” Schnapp said in a previous interview with Variety.
“I think that’s the beauty of it, that it just depends on the audience’s interpretation, whether Will refuses to grow and grow more slowly than his friends, or whether he’s really gay.”
He added, “He’s just confused and growing up. And that’s what it’s like to be a kid.”
