A full moon in perigee looks 14% larger because it is closer to us, and only 30% brighter than a full moon apogee, the point at which it is farthest.

A supermoon is also only seven percent larger and 15 percent brighter than an average full moon.

Parts of the scientific community, including NASA, use the definition of a supermoon established by astrologer Richard Nolle, who in 1979 classified it as a full moon at 90 percent of its perigee, the highest point. close to the Earth in its orbit.

The average distance from the Moon to Earth is 238,855 miles, but at its perigee it is only 222,089 miles.

The next full moon will be on August 11 and is also likely to be classified as a supermoon. The full moon in August is known as the “Sturgeon Moon” because the giant, prehistoric-looking sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most easily caught during this part of the summer.
