Sudbury Health Unit launches new COVID-19 risk index

Public Health Sudbury and Districts has launched a new color-coded COVID-19 risk index to help residents make better-informed health decisions.

The health unit said in a press release that the index it takes into account seven indicators, such as hospital admissions due to COVID-19 and active outbreaks to determine the public’s risk of contracting the virus while outside the community.

Risk levels are low, moderate, high and very high. Each has its corresponding color: green, yellow, orange and red.

As of Friday, the health unit determined that the level of risk in the area was moderate, but four of the indicators were in the low risk category.

“The COVID-19 Risk Index will be updated weekly and will incorporate the most current and relevant data on the status of COVID-19 in our community,” said Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Public Health Officer. Health Sudbury and Districts, in a press release.

“We hope this new tool will help residents navigate more easily to live with COVID-19 and make informed decisions about safe precautions for COVID-19.”

Virginia McFarland, a health unit epidemiologist, said the index data will be updated every Wednesday.

When the risk is higher, he said the health unit advises people to take more precautions, such as wearing a tight-fitting mask and social distancing.

The health unit said the updated vaccination against COVID-19 combined with the new risk index should help ensure public health.
