If you’re looking for things to do during the long Canada Day weekend, how about going to the ski slopes? Sunshine Village plans to reopen a chairlift and surrounding trails for six days, starting Tuesday.
“People are out of this world excited about this,” said Kendra Scurfield, Sunshine Village’s director of branding and communications.
“Many of them say,‘ Is that a joke? Is this true? Is this really happening? ‘ I personally say, what is more Canadian than skiing on Canada Day?
He explained that a record winter snowfall and a cool spring on the ski hill of Banff National Park is the reason why this is possible.
“Nine inches is one of our snowiest winters in history. The last time we had so much snow was actually the 1956-57 snow skiing and snowboarding season. So it was a very winter, very snowy, ”Scurfield said Sunday.

It is the first time in more than 30 years that the resort has opened so late in the ski season, and only the second in the resort’s nearly 100 years of operation.
“The last time we did it was in 1991, after an incredibly snowy year like this.”

Scurfield said once the decision was made to try to reopen for a few days, the mountain operations team had to see what was feasible.

“We had to make sure we could lower the snow pack again. It hasn’t been held since Monday’s Slush Cup, which was on May 23, so we’re also working to lift ropes, close in place and make sure the resort is safe to accommodate skiers and snowboarders.

Some tracks have been fixed and the Strawberry Express chairlift will open on June 28th. The hope is to continue in operation until July 3.

Sunshine Village already welcomes you to the mountains in the summer for hiking and sightseeing, and Scurfield said the Standish Express chairlift will also be open for that.

Tickets cost $ 59. But anyone who has pre-purchased their season pass for the 2023 ski season can ski this coming week for free.
