A provincial park in northwestern Ontario was evacuated and will remain closed for the entire week following a night storm that ravaged the area.
Provincial police said emergency officers were dispatched to Caliper Lake Provincial Park in the Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls area shortly after midnight Monday after receiving reports of a major weather event.
The town of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls described it as a “supercell storm” with strong winds. The municipality’s Facebook post said firefighters and police continue to respond to emergency calls.
According to Environment Canada, most severe summer weather events are generated by a supercell, a special type of storm where multiple rising currents continue to feed the storm, which can allow it to maintain intensity for hours.
Hydro One’s online storm center page shows disruptions affecting about 350 customers in an area along Highway 71 north of Highway 11 that includes Caliper Lake.
At Caliper Lake Park, police said, several trees were felled and fell on campers and vehicles while blocking the road.
There were no injuries, police added.
The Ontario Parks website shows that Caliper Lake Park will be closed at least until Friday.
Police said it is recommended to limit travel to the area of Nestor Falls because of the trees and cables that have been felled.
