The current temporary West Kelowna town hall in the Mount Boucherie community center
The opening of the new town hall and West Kelowna library building has been brought forward to 2023 due to the challenges of the global supply chain.
The city council will hear next week that they and staff will continue to occupy the Mount Boucherie community center until the spring of 2023. When construction began on the city council, it was with an occupation date of December 2022.
“Since early 2022, global supply chain conditions have changed significantly as a result of the pandemic that affected large infrastructure projects locally and around the world,” said Project Special Director Mark Roberts in a report to the council.
“The town hall / library project is also subject to the effects of this shortage of materials and delays, labor shortages and other factors that cause changes in the project schedule.”
Although deadlines have been stretched, budgets so far have not.
Some bidding packages for the projects have fallen short of the budget, and at the moment the city says its share of the total cost of $ 18 million remains unchanged.
Roberts says things are still a bit on the air and that any possible budget adjustments and a completed employment date will be determined when supply chain issues are best understood in the coming months.
The report notes that the public consultation on the restoration of the Mount Boucherie community center has just been completed and the next steps on this issue will be presented to the council in August.
